CHAMPAIGN

Champaign is located 135 miles south of Chicago, 124 miles west of Indianapolis and 178 miles northeast of St. Louis. It has a population of 75,254 and is considered to be the hub of the Silicon Prairie. It is the home of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Champaign was founded in 1855. The city has 58 parks and is home to many corporations, including Kraft Foods, Intel and Yahoo. On September 22, 1985, Champaign hosted the first Farm Aid concert at the University of Illinois Memorial Stadium. The concert raised $7 million dollars for struggling American family farmers and was attended by 80,000 people. Champaign continues to experience growth, and as a result, has been affected by the drug trafficking into the state.

Illinois has always been a hub for drug traffickers because of its unique location. Chicago’s O’Hare Airport is the busiest airport in the country and this fact has made Illinois an attractive target for drug traffickers. Chicago has long had a problem with drug-related gang activity. This has meant an increase in homicides, prostitution, money laundering and many other social and economic problems. Most of the supply of cocaine comes into Chicago in large amounts. The drug is then shipped throughout the state and to New York City and Philadelphia. Heroin continues to be a problem in Illinois because the drug is cheap, widely available and strong. Methamphetamine is also a problem for law enforcement in Illinois and is produced in mainly rural areas in clandestine laboratories using stolen supplies. Chicago is a big city and has a continued problem with club drugs, popular with young people. Club drugs like GHB and ecstasy are a frequent fixture of the concert and nightclub scene. As in every other state in the country, prescription drug addiction continues to increase at an alarming rate, creating many criminal, social and economic headaches for residents of Illinois.
